EPIGRAPHY AND PHILATELY COLLECTION

Military uniforms album

The epigraphy collection includes stone plaques of various nature and chronology engraved to honor or commemorate the exploits of the Spanish Army and their leading figures. It is worth of mention the exquisite medallion depicting the bust of Antonio Romero Ortiz, carved in white marble by the Galician sculptor Juan Sanmartín Serna (1830-1898); a representational work that fits in with the taste of the Spanish figurative sculpture of the nineteenth century.

Notable examples from the philately collection are the stamp albums, particularly those with stamps of military uniforms coming from series issued by the Fábrica de Moneda y Timbre (Spanish National Mint). Each series has been arranged in a single album that includes an explanation on the stamps issue and displays the following inscriptions: Holy Brotherhood of Castile, Old Guard of Castile, infantry harquebusier, cuirassier and infantry sergeant.

Interesting for the types represented on it is the series of the Royal House of Spain, issued in 1978. The stamps bear bust portraits of each member of the royal family. The stamp set that commemorates the three hundredth anniversary of the Romanovs’ enthronement is also remarkable. Each stamp was ten kopecks worth and bears a bust portrait of Czar Nicholas II.
